Crypto Source of Wealth vs Source of Funds
Two related compliance questions that are often mixed up — especially when crypto is involved.
Source of funds asks where the money for a specific transaction or purchase came from. Source of wealth asks how you accumulated your overall wealth over time. Crypto wallet statements primarily help document on-chain movement for a period — the funds trail — not a full life-history wealth narrative.
Compliance and conveyancing teams may ask for both. Pair wallet statements with employment, business, or exchange records as requested. Acceptance depends on the receiving institution.
Source of funds in one sentence
Where did the money for this payment, deposit or transfer come from, and can you show the path?
Source of wealth in one sentence
How did you build the overall wealth that makes this activity plausible — over years, not just the last hop on-chain?
Documents that often map to each question
- SoF: wallet statements for the funding period, bank statements showing fiat legs, exchange withdrawal records
- SoW: employment income evidence, company accounts, sale agreements, long-run portfolio records, tax filings
- Both: a clear cover note that points reviewers to the right exhibit
A practical order of operations
- Ask the reviewer which question they are asking (SoF, SoW, or both)
- Assemble on-chain statements for the relevant wallets and dates
- Add exchange and bank records for any off-chain legs
- Write a short chronology in plain English
- Do not claim guaranteed acceptance
How CryptoBankStatement can help
CryptoBankStatement organises self-custody BTC/ETH/USDC/USDT activity into PDF/CSV for source-of-funds style review. It does not produce a formal source-of-wealth affidavit.
Important limitations
CryptoBankStatement is not a bank, accountant, solicitor, tax adviser, immigration adviser or financial adviser. This content is not legal, tax, financial, immigration or banking advice. The receiving institution decides what documents it accepts. This article is educational only and is not AML or legal advice.

Frequently asked questions
- Which one do UK solicitors usually mean first?
- Conveyancing AML checks often emphasise source of funds for the deposit or purchase monies, while source of wealth may appear for larger or higher-risk matters. Ask your solicitor which pack they need.
- Can a wallet statement answer source of wealth?
- It can support part of the story (for example showing long-held on-chain balances), but wealth narratives usually also need off-chain evidence such as salary, business sale documents or exchange histories.
- Where do exchange CSVs fit?
- Exchange exports help when funds were bought, sold or withdrawn from a custodial platform. Combine them with self-custody statements when both apply.
- Does wallet-signed mode help SoF or SoW?
- It strengthens proof of address control. It does not by itself explain how wealth was earned.
- Is this legal advice?
- No. Confirm requirements with your solicitor, compliance officer or regulated adviser.
